In the early days, desktop computers were primarily used for storing information and accessing the web. From 1970 to 1990, desktops underwent significant evolution, transitioning from mainframes to minicomputers, and eventually to microcomputers. Leading companies like IBM, Apple, and HP continuously updated their computer systems to stay ahead in the market. During the 1990s, there were frequent upgrades to CPUs and graphics cards, enhancing performance and appealing to gamers. These upgrades continued into the early 2000s. While desktops had common configurations, by the mid-2000s, the focus began shifting from desktops to laptops.

Laptops became increasingly popular for both business and personal use. By 2018, the ratio of laptops to desktops was nearly 2:1, indicating that laptops had become more prevalent. This trend likely continued into 2020, with the percentage of desktop usage decreasing. Although some users still prefer desktops for their comfort and usability, the portability of laptops has led to a steady decline in desktop use.

At the same time, the mobile market has evolved significantly. While the concept of mobile phones dates back to the early 1900s and some early devices from the 1940s were essentially two-way radios, they were not the mobile phones we use today. The first mass-produced mobile phone, introduced by Motorola in 1973, was not widely used until the late 1990s. However, from the early 2000s, companies like Motorola and Nokia began developing handheld mobile devices that were lighter and more portable. The late 2000s saw the rise of smartphones, which featured advanced capabilities and large touchscreens instead of physical keyboards. This shift towards touchscreen interfaces has continued to evolve, reflecting ongoing advancements in mobile technology.

The rise of smartphones and tablet PCs has significantly increased the time people spend interacting with digital content and the variety of locations where they do so. The graph below illustrates how mobile phones have surpassed desktops and laptops in usage, becoming the most versatile device that offers a wide range of features.

From the graph, it's clear that there has been a continuous evolution in technology from desktop computers to mobile phones. Desktops are no longer the primary device worldwide, as people now use a variety of devices with different screen resolutions.
